VLHC Notes
VLHC Notes is a forum for QuarkNet teachers to enter news, information, and ideas related to the LHC, QuarkNet, and the Virtual LHC Center. Those who have VLHC wiki accounts can add new notes directly; those who do not can send their notes to a VLHC fellow. Any submissions should include a title, the name of the author and the date. Notes should be entered in the same format (as seen below).
An Introduction
I'm the old guy who has no desire to stop teaching. I spent 40 years teaching high school chemistry and physics (and occasionally more) within walking distance of the waters of the Pacific at the NW corner of the lower 48. I'm now trying to figure if it's possible to do effective, free, public science instruction via the Internet for the people of the earth who don't have a well trained science teacher handy.

Hi, all. I've been teaching various high school science courses for 28 years, but Physical Science is one I've taught every year. I began teaching at a small private school in Georgia and have taught in Lexington, South Carolina for the past 16 years. QuarkNet came into my life in 2002 and really gave me a glimpse into actual scientific research. The now defunct center where I worked was at the University of South Carolina where I was involved in designing procedures for building the TOF wall and building a mock-up for a T-0 device for Project MIPP. I also enjoyed involvement in the Teaching and Learning Academy at FermiLab in 2006. Currently we have a cosmic ray detector at the high school where I teach and I am trying to find ways to get more students involved in doing research with this instrument. On the side, I maintain a website that features a resource for Physical Science curriculum. It is a little dated, but still of some value ("Science Stuff" website).

Greetings all! I've been teaching science since 1979 and I am currently in my second year at Northwest High School, about 30 miles southwest of the Arch in St. Louis on Highway 30. My current teaching assignment is Chemistry/AP Environmental Science. I also sponsor a small but enthusiastic Astronomy club. In addition, I am teaching an Introduction to Astronomy course and Observational Astronomy at St. Louis Community College. I was involved with the Quark Net center at the University of Missouri - St. Louis until the tragic death of Julia Thompson. The node is no longer functional and the equipment is in storage at UMSL. I will likely be bringing it to this workshop in the hope that it can be distributed to others who might use it. I also maintain the web page and library for the St. Louis Astronomical Society (http://www.slasonline.org) and have served as various officers for the organization. I to maintain my own science related website (http://www.smallscience.net) that has information on a variety of areas.
I'm looking forward to this workshop and will be happy to explore Chicago a bit while I am there! One of my releases is playing blues harmonica, so I will be looking for people who might want to get out at some point and hit a couple of blues clubs if we have time! I'll see all of you on Sunday!
